But, within 350 yards or so, the .17 Remington makes a great varmint and predator cartridge, as the frangible bullets make very small holes in a furbearer’s pelt—and usually don’t exit—yet have enough energy and a flat enough trajectory to place shots accurately on woodchucks and prairie dogs, creating that famous red mist. Either gun will just be a range toy or rare varminting. Stuff just dies and you can barely tell they were hit with anything. Mag. Looking for previous installments of our "Head to Head" series? That said, owning both and shooting both is sort of like owning and shooting a 243 and a 6 mm !! I also had one of the 700 Classics, just to try out. I am considering either the .17 Remington or a .17 Hornet. In general I'd say there's at least 100 yards difference in consistent performance, maybe more like 150. There are smaller bore diameters, but you’ll have to look long and hard to find them. The new issue of Rifle has a review of the CZ527 for 22 hornet and they mention ed that the 527 can be had in a 222 remington. The .223 Rem. driving a 55gn bullet at 3200fps sighted-in 50mm high at 100 metres for a 200 metre zero, shows 25mm more drop at 250 than the .17 Hornet but retains 565 ft/lb of energy which gives it over twice as much hitting power as the .17 Hornet at that distance. I got a friend that is a coyote hunting machine and he swears by the 204. T he .17 Hornet is the quintessential mid-range varmint cartridge—regardless if you’re hunting east or west of the Mississippi River. The slight five-degree shoulder of the .22 Hornet was radically steepened to a 25-degree shoulder and blown-out to increase case capacity. It is nice, almost silent, and laser accurate at the ranges I use it for, but it just does not have the stopping power to take coyotes reliably. Ackley who used it on much larger game, but such use is not typical.
